The Los Rios Community College District is a two-year public college district serving the greater Sacramento region. Our district includes American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake and Sacramento City colleges; major centers in Placerville, Davis, West Sacramento, Elk Grove, Natomas and Rancho Cordova; and special services for business and industry.

Our colleges offer transfer education – students complete freshman and sophomore years and transfer to a four-year college or university – and AA/AS degrees and certificates in over 70 career fields. The District’s 2400 square mile service area includes Sacramento and El Dorado counties and parts of Yolo, Placer, and Solano counties. Approximately 75,000 plus students are enrolled in our four colleges and outreach centers.

The District office houses a number of district-wide services. These include the Chancellor’s office, Board Room, Legal Services, Business Services, Human Resources, Institutional Research, Resource Development and Information Technology. Other district-wide services which can be found at various locations around the community are the, District Police Department, Facilities Management Department and the Workforce and Economic Development Center. Each department strives for the highest quality in all programs, services, and activities for our communities and staff.

Position Summary

The Los Rios Community College District is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time teaching assignments. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitment. Assignments may include day, evening and weekend courses.

Typical instructional assignment will be to provide automotive training to students and technicians.

About the American River College Program:

This degree prepares the student for entry level employment as a smog and driveability service technician. The program also prepares the student for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Engine Repair A1, Automatic Transmissions/Transaxles A2, Electrical A6, Engine Performance A8, Advanced Engine Performance L1 along with the California Enhanced Area (EA) Smog Check License.

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

● Identify and implement safety procedures involved in the diagnosis, service and repair of all major automobile and light truck systems.
● Describe the function, operation and characteristics of all major components in the following automotive systems: engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, electrical, air conditioning, emission control and computerized engine controls.
● Identify and follow manufacture standards for proper automobile diagnosis and repair.
● Operate hand and power tools necessary for automobile and light truck repair.
● Operate diagnostic equipment and interpret test results.
● Demonstrate the skills and knowledge to analyze, diagnose, and repair automotive engines, automatic and manual transmissions, suspension systems, braking systems, electrical systems, fuel delivery systems, ignition systems, emissions control systems and computerized engine controls.

Teaching assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, on and off campus.

Assignment Responsibilities

General Responsibilities:
The adjunct faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of an adjunct faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.

The faculty member will work with the Central Valley New Car Dealers Association and other interested automotive agencies in ascertaining training and recruiting priorities. In addition, assignment will include: Networking with high school counselors and attending high school career days/career fairs to promote automotive programs and employment opportunities.

Other responsibilities may include maintaining contacts with area ROPs and AYES campuses, as well as program coordination and articulation with the automotive departments at the Los Rios Community College District and with automotive programs at area high schools.

The successful candidate may be responsible for coordination activities; for recruiting students for the program, assisting students in obtaining placement at shops, tracking students’ progress through visits to shops and discussions with the shop foreman.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and two years of professional experience; OR, any associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent.*

2. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
