The Institution

Folsom Lake College (FLC) was established in 2004 as the fourth college in the Los Rios Community College District and serves over 8,700 students each semester. The college and its centers, El Dorado and Rancho Cordova, primarily serve students from the rapidly growing areas of eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties, forming a dynamic learning community committed to academic excellence and innovation. The Harris Center for the Arts, a regional performing arts center located at the college’s main campus, offers tremendous teaching and learning opportunities and brings the arts, culture, and entertainment to both the college and the surrounding communities.

FLC is an open access; comprehensive community college that provides educational opportunities designed to enrich and empower students and inspire excellence. FLC awards Associate in Arts or Science degrees, and transfer degrees; Career Technical Education certificates, transfer credit for students who intend to continue their education at a four-year college or university, instruction in basic skills math and English, and English for non-native speakers.

The college mission is focused on a rigorous educational program with a strong focus on student success. To this end, the college provides a broad range of degree and certificate programs, a comprehensive student services program, a variety of learning modalities including online and hybrid courses, as well as numerous opportunities for student engagement and leadership. The college also provides classes in a variety of scheduling formats including semester, short term, and weekend and incorporates the newest technologies for classroom instruction.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering performs duties in the administration and supervision of the assigned instructional area(s) including, but not limited to instructor assignments, staff development and evaluation; budget recommendations and oversight; preparation of reports including administration of day, extended day, weekend, and summer offerings.

The disciplines which the Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering supervises include Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, as well as Library, Learning Skills, and Computer Science.

Assignment Responsibilities

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:
● General supervision of the affairs of the area.
● Coordinating the activities of the faculty and staff of the area, and working with district and college staff in all areas of responsibility.
● Overseeing program development, implementation, and evaluation.
● Making budget recommendations.
● Facilitating the administration for day, extended day, weekend, and summer offerings.
● Functioning as the first line administrator in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned instructional programs and services.
● Supervising department chairs in assigned instructional programs.
● Coordinating the full-time and adjunct personnel selection process within areas of responsibility, including developing and reviewing screening criteria, recruiting, screening, interviewing, and recommending faculty hires.
● Supporting the program review and educational planning processes for the assigned educational programs.
● Providing administrative leadership in the development and management of the budget in areas supervised.
● Participating as a management team member in general, college-wide activities related to personnel, facilities, and funding of instructional programs.
● Serving on local, district, and state committees as directed by the Vice President and/or President.
● Participating in efforts of enrollment support, including recruitment, persistence, and retention activities.
● Serving as an administrative liaison on assigned Participatory Governance Committees.
● Working flexible hours including evening and weekends when necessary.
● Performing other duties as assigned.

Administrative assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and/or off campus work and/or hours.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Have a master’s degree* from an accredited institution complete by January 2, 2018.

2. Have one year formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.

3. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
